A Long Journey: Emily and Fin Dresses from Talis

The English Text:

Last month, November 2, 2018 to be exact, Talis, a fashion shop in Australia that sells fashion products from Europe, held a warehouse clearance sale in a Facebook group called ‘Talis Vintage Style’. Dresses usually priced at $150 were uploaded onto the group at a price of $50. This meant of course that all the members of the Facebook group competed with one another to buy the dresses as quickly as possible. And do you know which products caught my attention the most? Emily and Fin!

Emily and Fin is a fashion brand from London which produces fine clothes, both in the modern and vintage style. I am interested in their dresses in the vintage style. I’ve been interested in trying their dresses for quite a while, but I was uncertain about the size. Because of this, when Talis held the big and remarkable sale event, I thought here is the best opportunity to try out Emily and Fin.

I recall that over the few days the sale was taking place, I was actually busy travelling by land from Central Queensland to Brisbane. The internet signal during the trip was unstable, but nonetheless I persisted in trying to join in with this event. And I was successful in winning three dresses from Emily and Fin which I had dreamed about, namely ADA Dress Romance is Born, Violet Dress Jade with White Polka Dots and Florence Dress Bed of Roses.

At the end of the sale, Talis sent me three dresses via express delivery through Australia Post. Usually items sent via the express service will arrive in my town two days from the date of sending at the slowest. I waited for four days but my parcel had not arrived. I checked the tracking number, and there was a notice ‘delayed’ until Wednesday. I waited until Wednesday and then Friday, but still my parcel did not arrive. So I went to the post office closest to me to ask where my parcel was.

I received terrible news at the post office. They said there was a possibility my parcel was in a truck which caught fire in Central Queensland. I was shocked, and it was a little hard for me to believe it until I received a notice from Australia Post, confirming that my three dresses had disappeared in the fire! It was really sad! Fortunately, the fire did not cause any fatalities.

You might think that losing three dresses is not a problem because they can be replaced. Unfortunately, the three dresses were unique and would not be produced again. I was still lucky that Talis had two dresses in stock in my size as replacements for the burned up dresses. And one of these two replacements was exactly like the dress I had bought in the sale event. The two dresses are Violet Dress Jade with White Polka Dots and Violet Dress Blue Watercolour.

To begin with I will talk about the sizing of these dresses. The two Violet dresses I obtained are listed as size XS, or 8 UK. Before these dresses arrived, I did not know how to convert the sizes above into Australian sizes. I have 83 cm bust and 68 cm waist. Usually, I use a size 8 for retro dresses from UK brands and size 6 for modern dresses from Australian brands.

It turns out that size XS from Emily and Fin is equal to size 8 in Australia. Because of this, these dresses are a little bit too big for me. Nonetheless, these dresses are easily made smaller. I stitch a part of the shoulder by about 4 cm and then this dress feel more comfortable for me.

These dresses were designed in the 1940s style. Usually dresses from the 1940s have puffed shoulders which make the woman look masculine. This dress does not have puffed up shoulders but is designed with armsleeves that make the shoulders look broader. Not just that, this dress was designed with a wide skirt that falls below the knees. Because I have a short body, the skirt falls far below the knee.

The most interesting thing aside from the very elegant design of the dress is that both dresses possess quality material that is excellent for the summer. Yes, that’s right, 100% cotton fabric is used for both the outer and the lining. And this dress is fully lined, very comfortable for the whole day.

In addition to that, this dress also comes with two pockets that are quite large, large enough for your phone and phone charger together! LOL. The circumference of the wide skirt gives me the chance to wear a petticoat and give it some more volume. Actually, this dress still appears voluminous even if I don’t wear a petticoat because of the lining under the skirt.

Another interesting thing about dresses from Emily and Fin is the place of production. Most of the retro dresses that I buy from the UK are produced in China. However, Emily and Fin dresses are produced in India. I don’t know yet if this influences the quality of the tailoring because I will have to prove it by wearing and washing the dresses a few times first.

Nonetheless, so far I’ve been happy with the quality and comfort offered by these dresses. One thing only I would add if the Violet dresses were to be produced again: a change in the design of the zipper at the back. I feel that these dresses would be more flexible if the zipper ran up until the very top of the back of the neck. Instead, there is a 5 cm gap between the end of the zipline and the neckline. This gap makes it difficult to release the dress. Aside from that, these dresses impressed me greatly. And I cannot wait for the next Emily and Fin collection in the vintage style! And hopefully these dresses arrive without any other shocking incidents.

SEBUAH PERJALANAN PANJANG: DRESS EMILY AND FIN DARI TALIS

Emily and Fin!

Dan saya berhasil memenangkan 3 dress dari Emily and Fin yang memang saya impikan, yakni ADA Dress Romance is Born, Violet Dress Jade with White Polka Dots dan Florence Dress Bed of Roses.
